Registration for Urban Mobility Pre-accelerator Is Open Now
A remote-control vehicle and other mobility incubator solutions to be tested in VEF pilot territory

At the end of the summer, remote-control autonomous vehicle, electric minibus, vehicle charging options, last-mile solutions, and other ideas promoting the city's development will be tested in the VEF pilot territory within the framework of the "Urban mobility incubator". Six teams enrolled in the first mobility-focused business incubator program in Latvia will work on the challenges of climate-neutral mobility defined by the city of Riga. The incubator is offered by innovation movement “VEFRESH” in cooperation with the Institute of Electronics and Computer Sciences, Riga City Council, co-working space “Teikums”, and supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.

Mobility solutions to be tested in Riga

The application for the “Urban Mobility Incubator” program, in which participants will have the opportunity to develop their idea, deploy a prototype in a real urban environment, meet investors and receive support worth € 6,000, is open until May 31. The incubator is offered by innovation movement “VEFRESH” in cooperation with the Institute of Electronics and Computer Sciences, Riga City Council, co-working space “Teikums”, and supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. Teams with ideas at different stages of development for climate-neutral mobility are invited to apply for the program.

The smart-helmet solution takes first place in a mobility hackathon

On 15-17 April, more than 175 participants took part in the 48h technology marathon "Urban Mobility Hackathon", where the leading event partner was Embassy of the Netherlands in Latvia, and pitched 23 solutions that have the potential to foster sustainable mobility. The hackathon was organized by innovation movement “VEFRESH” in cooperation with the Institute of Electronics and Computer Sciences, Riga City Council, co-working space “Teikums”, and supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. Participants were supported by technology companies “Accenture Latvia” and “Latvijas Mobilais Telefons” (LMT), as well as by a wide range of local and foreign mentors.

Lampposts as charging points for electric vehicles and other ideas to be developed in the hackathon

Charging electric vehicles through street lampposts and creating a metrobus line in Riga. What will the hackathon participants work on this week? When it comes to urban planning, Gehl is one of the most well-known names around the globe and the studio is often considered as the pioneers of the simple, yet powerful idea of making cities for people. Within VEFRESH audio series I had a chance to talk to Jeff Risom who is Partner and Chief innovation officer at Gehl and researches the interaction between people, urban spaces and technology. The focus of our conversation is citizen engagement in smart city development. Citizen participation in infrastructure development is quite a stable and predictable process - there are rules and regulations regarding when and how public consultations should take place, how long they should last, etc. However, if we think about technological solutions in the city, citizen engagement is at best inconsistent if not absent entirely.

Smart parking sensors are tested in VEF innovation district

Latvian startup Parkdroid in cooperation with the innovation movement VEFRESH has started testing new parking sensors in the VEF district. This is the first VEFRESH cooperation project with a local startup since a memorandum was signed with the Riga City Council and the Ministry of Economics in June on marking the VEF district as a pilot territory for smart city solutions.
